Copper has been proven effective in the treatment of the bacteria that causes Papillomatous Digital Dermatitis (PDD) and Copper Sulphate (CuSO4) has been the preferred source of Copper. CuSO4, when dissolved in water, produces Copper ions (Cu++), which kill bacteria. |
|
Mixing water with 10 kilos of CuSO4 in a 200 litre footbath will produce a 5% solution effective for 200 cows. The problem is that Copper solubility must be controlled to stay effective in solution. As the chart illustrates, a ph of 7 (typical tap water) will result in almost 83% of the copper unavailable and precipitates to the bottom of the footbath. While a ph of 2 results in almost 85% active to attack the bacteria. By managing ph, copper can remain in solution and stay effective in attacking bacteria. Copper disposal regulations are increasing making it necessary to reduce consumption.
